Am I a 1 or a 4?

Type 1 vs Type 4

The Reformer or The Individualist?

Ones and Fours both feel the gap between how things are and how they should be. Ones correct the world; Fours search their own depths.

Take the 6-question tiebreaker

By the enneagram.dev editorial team · Updated

In short

Ones and Fours both feel sharply that something is wrong or missing, but they locate it in different places. A One sees the flaw in the world and in their own conduct, and responds by correcting it and keeping feelings in check; a Four feels the lack in their identity, and responds by going deeper into feeling to find what's true. Ones are trying to be good, and Fours are trying to be authentic.

Why they get mixed up

The overlap

Ones and Fours sit on each other's arrows. Under stress, a One moves toward Type 4, becoming moody, misunderstood, and drawn to indulgences they'd normally judge. In growth, a Four moves toward Type 1, becoming disciplined, principled, and focused on the work. A test taken during a hard season can catch a One in Four territory, and a test taken during a good season can catch a Four looking very One-like.

The two types also share a temperament. Both are idealists who feel the distance between the real and the ideal as something close to pain. Both can be exacting about their craft, critical of what's shallow or careless, and frustrated that other people don't seem to hold the same bar. A Four's aesthetic standards can sound a lot like a One's correctness, and a One's quiet sense of being the only one who cares can sound like a Four's sense of being different.

Wings deepen the overlap. A 1w9 and a 4w5 can both be reserved, refined, private, and a little apart from the crowd. The difference is where each type stands. Ones belong to the gut center and hold their anger in; Fours belong to the heart center and are concerned with identity and being truly seen.

The tells

How to tell them apart

  1. Feelings: managed or explored

Ones tend to keep emotion on a short leash, half-suspecting it will cloud their judgment or lead them somewhere they shouldn't go. Fours treat feeling as their best source of information about who they are, and will stay with a painful mood to learn what it's saying. If you'd rather settle an emotion and get back to work, that leans One. If you'd rather understand it fully, even at a cost, that leans Four.

  2. A standard for everyone, or for me

A One's standard feels universal: there's a right way, and it applies to everyone, including you. A Four's standard feels personal: what matters is what's true for me, and a rule that feels inauthentic is worth breaking. Ones are uncomfortable when people ignore the rules. Fours are uncomfortable when they're asked to be like everyone else.

  3. Which way the arrow points

If your moody, melancholy side shows up after long stretches of over-responsibility and feels foreign when it arrives, you're likely a One visiting Four under stress. If longing and emotional intensity are your baseline, and structure and discipline feel like something you reach when you're doing well, you're likely a Four moving toward One. The question is which state feels like home.

  4. Resentment or envy

When a One looks at other people, the sting is resentment: they get to be careless, and I don't. When a Four looks at other people, the sting is envy: they have an ease or belonging I seem to lack. Resentment is about fairness. Envy is about identity and what feels missing in yourself.

  5. What you need from a partner

In a relationship, a One feels most cared for when a partner keeps their word, owns their mistakes, and offers specific appreciation. A Four feels most cared for when a partner sees them in depth and takes their feelings seriously. The worst moment for a One is a broken promise. For a Four, it's having their feelings treated as an overreaction.

Questions worth sitting with

  • When a strong emotion hits, is it more that you try to get it under control so you can think clearly, or that you stay with it to understand what it says about you?
  • When you hold to a high standard, is it more that you believe it's the right way for anyone, or that it's true to who you are?
  • When you feel low, is it more that you're exhausted from carrying responsibility alone, or that something essential in your life feels missing?
  • When someone else seems to have it easier, is it more that you feel it's unfair, or that you long for what they have?
  • When you make something you're proud of, is it more that you're glad it was done well, or that you're glad it finally expresses you?

Questions

Type 1 vs Type 4: common questions

Why do I relate to both Type 1 and Type 4?

Because they're linked by a line on the Enneagram: Ones go toward Four under stress, and Fours go toward One in growth. Most people can recognize both states in themselves. Look at your everyday baseline, not your best or worst season, and compare the core fears on Type 1 and Type 4.

Can a Four be a perfectionist?

Yes. Fours can be extremely exacting, especially about creative work and anything that expresses who they are. The difference is that a Four's perfectionism serves authenticity and meaning, while a One's serves correctness. A Four will happily break a convention to get it right for them.

Is a 1w9 like a 4w5?

On the surface they can be very similar: quiet, refined, reserved, and principled about their work. A 1w9 is calm and idealistic and wants things to be right. A 4w5 is introspective and intense and wants to be understood. If you feel like a quiet reformer, look at 1w9; if you feel like a private outsider, look at 4w5.

Are Ones and Fours compatible?

They're a challenging but rich match because each sits on the other's arrow, which gives them unusual room to grow. Ones can help Fours act on their ideals; Fours can help Ones feel what they've been holding back. Read more on the 1 and 4 compatibility page, or take the free test.
